The Vids Are Alright

Music videos past and present

About:

I love music videos - watching them, writing about them and making my own on extremely limited budgets. Great videos are part of the reason I like pop music.

I know this blog has a rubbish name but to be honest you're all lucky I didn't call this something like 'Video Filled The Internet Fnar'.

Disclaimer:

Unfortunately some record companies don't like other people embedding their videos in order to give them more publicity, so I apologise on their behalf if any of the videos I post are no longer available.

Feel free to go to Youtube.com and complain about this daft precedent (or just search for the video there instead).

Sander van Doorn vs Robbie Williams - Close My Eyes

Just before you jump out of your chair, pelt down the stairs and run into the street screaming “Robbie Williams has discovered Autotune!!!!”, let me tell you this is a lovely bibble-trance rework of an album track off Rudebox. WAIT COME BACK ok it’s not going to set the world on fire, but there are plenty of worse Robbie tracks Mr Van Doorn could have chosen to spruce up for 2009. See how many Pet Shop Boys references you can spot!

To accompany Robbie’s uncharacteristic Faithless-style murmuring we have a series of serious young ladies who appear to have finally defeated those pesky laws of gravity that have been keeping us down (o-ho) all this time. It’s all very pretty but also DULL. As ever I am mourning the missed opportunities here: a) the blue man getting to bang some drums with fireworks coming out of them b) a full on gymnastics routine (perhaps something like this - watch from 3.00 onwards) c) when the ballerina girl hits the floor at 2.54 there should be a massive sonic BOOOOOM that reveals her light-as-a-feather image as MERE ILLUSION d) better yet, get all the girls boogieing on down to something a bit more banging in the first place.
